The Digital Art Movement
(An ongoing dialogue)
Many people ask me, "so what is Digital Art anyway?" I
respond
with, "any computer generated, or computer manipulated
image."
Of course, I'm setting myself up for controversy, since noone
will
agree about what is art and what is not, especially when
it comes
to images created in the 20th and
21st Centuries. The inevitable
interminable discussion about Digital Art as a true art
movement
has already begun. I am a digital artist. I create
Digital Art. I call
it art. I think it is art. My friends call it art. Some
oil and canvas
painter friends of mine tell me it is art
and it is beautiful. Some
don't think all of my
images classify as art. Some do.
The
bickering among purists, traditionalists, laymen,
scholars, and
even some artists I find a bit tiring. I am an artist -a
digital artist.
I create digital art. I call it art.I think it
is art. What the public
does with it is beyond my
control. I'd rather be concerned with
fully expressing myself through the
digital medium than worrying
about whether or not what I'm
doing classifies as art in a histo-
rical sense. To all of you
skeptics out there: if Warhol, Pollack
and Kinkaid are on your
hate list, too bad. The world chose
them. You're out numbered. Giger,
a 20th Century surrealist
(of "Alien" fame) now has a full line of
furniture and is exploring
neo Art Deco coffee table
sculpture. His friend and mentor,
Salvador Dali, is most certainly rolling in his grave at
the thought.
Digital Art created in the 21st Century is
not and cannot be held
by the chains that bind traditional art forms to logic,
form, content,
and style. A new method-sensitive and
interpretive language needs
to develop in order to even begin to
speak about digital art. New
categories must be invented to make
room for this emerging art
form that will revolutionize the way
traditional art, and even arts
and crafts are concieved. Consider the
difference between Vivaldi's
and Haydn's music. They lived about 100 years
apart. During the
span of time between Vivaldi and the later
Haydn, the process of
musical notation had evolved to its perfected state
near the peak of
Haydn's composing career. He could
write a musical score that
Vivaldi could only dream
of for the simple fact that the music
writing technology had changed. The advancement of this
techno-
logy played a key role
in Haydn's creative process. Today
technology is shaping our lives
in ways that people a half a
generation ago could not have
foreseen. Anyone remember the
geocentric universe? That pesky Copernicus sure
did screw things
up for everyone who thought they knew everything
! I think of myself
as a mid-wife and witness to the birth
of Digital Art as a true
art movement. Come and explore
my world with me.
